FAQ
Questions everyone asks first
No. Everything on MoneyWise is educational content, not financial advice. The guides explain general concepts with illustrative examples — they can't account for your personal situation. For big decisions about investing, taxes, or debt, consider talking to a qualified professional.
Track one full month of spending first — you can't fix what you can't see. Then build a starter emergency fund of $500–$1,000 while making at least the minimum payments on any debt. Our 50/30/20 budget guide is the simplest framework to start with.
The classic target is 20% of take-home pay, but the right number is the one you'll actually sustain. If 20% feels impossible, start with 5% and increase it by 1% every few months — you'll barely feel each step, and the habit compounds.
As a rule of thumb: kill high-interest debt first (roughly anything above 7–8% APR), because wiping out a 22% credit card balance is a guaranteed 22% return — the market can't promise that. Still grab any employer 401(k) match first; that's free money. See our debt payoff comparison.
